It is no secret that the Philadelphia Eagles’ linebacker unit is not the strongest heading into the regular season and it looks like the front office is doing their due diligence to upgrade the position.
According to Jason La Canfora of the CBSSports.com, the Eagles are looking to acquire an inside linebacker via trade. La Canfora also mentions that things will intensify in the next few weeks.
Currently, the Eagles’ starting linebackers are Nigel Bradham, Jordan Hicks and Mychal Kendricks as the team transitions to a 4-3 defense under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz.
According to the Eagles’ first unofficial depth chart of the preseason, rookie seventh round pick Joe Walker and undrafted free agent Don Cherry are backing up Hicks. With that being said, the team is not comfortable with the idea that if Hicks goes down again with an injury, they would have to lean on unproven guys.
Outside of Hicks, the Eagles lack depth behind Bradham and Kendricks as well. Behind those guys are Najee Goode, Deontae Skinner, Quentin Gause, and Myke Tavarres. Both Gause and Tavarres are undrafted free agents, while Goode is the veteran of the group.
Last weekend, it was reported that the Eagles were in “heavy negotiations” with free agent veteran linebacker Stephen Tulloch. Since that report, we haven’t heard anything else regarding Tulloch.
Obviously, general manager Howie Roseman knows that if any of the starting linebackers go down with an injury, the Eagles are in trouble.
Nevertheless, the Eagles do not want to be caught in a scenario like were last season, when they lost Byron Maxwell, Nolan Carroll, and Eric Rowe to injuries. The next few weeks will be interesting to see if the Eagles make a trade.
