The Philadelphia Eagles will be going into Week One with a 52 man roster as they released cornerback Brandon Hughes today. It seems almost certain that Hughes will be re-signed next week, after he is medically cleared to practice.

Hughes being released is a special case because he is a vested veteran. That means the Eagles would not have to guarantee his full salary for the 2013 season. A quick note for any player that is a vested vet on the 53 man roster for the opening game is guaranteed his base salary for the year.

Brandon Hughes has been a key contributor for the Eagles in special teams and will definitely be needed at cornerback since there is a lack of depth at that position. Hughes is a 2009 fifth round draft pick of San Diego Chargers and was claimed off the New York Giants’ practice squad in 2010 by the birds.

So far in three seasons with the Eagles, he has only started in one game. Finally, Hughes was also ruled out of Monday night’s game when he was on the team due to a fractured hand that he suffered in the third preseason game versus the Jacksonville Jaguars.
