This is not a surprising move to Eagles fans as this move has been talked about since the season was over. Avant’s fate was sealed after the Eagles re-signed wide receivers Riley Cooper and Jeremy Maclin to deals.
Cooper received a long term deal while Maclin received a one year deal. The reason why the Eagles released Avant was because he was due a cap hit of $4 million and a $1 million roster bonus. A receiver who is 30-years old making that much doesn’t really work when he isn’t an integral part of your offense.
Avant is a solid receiver that will have suitors when free agency starts. Despite his role in the Eagles offense the past few seasons, he was always reliable and is a great character guy in the locker room.
Avant was a fourth round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles back in the 2006 NFL Draft. During his career with the Eagles, Avant had 297 receptions for 3,646 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. This season in Chip Kelly’s offense, Avant had 38 receptions for 447 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
His best season as an Eagles came in 2011, where he had 52 receptions for 679 receiving yards and one touchdown. Don’t be surprised if you see the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets asking about Avant’s services.
