Philadelphia Eagles vs. Kansas City Chiefs: Five questions with Arrowhead Pride

Today, at TSL we are getting prepared for the Philadelphia Eagles versus the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night. This will be the return of Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb’s number will officially be retired in Eagles’ franchise history.

So to get prepared for Thursday’s night game, I did a quick question and answer with Joel Thorman, manager of Arrowhead Pride, Kansas City Chiefs blog, which is apart of SB Nation. We discussed Andy Reid, their first round pick Eric Fischer, and much more so here it is enjoy.

Jovan Alford:  What are the feelings in KC about the return of Andy Reid to Philadelphia?

Joel Thorman: KC is pretty excited about this. (So is Philly. I sat next to a reporter from Philly at last week’s Cowboys-Chiefs game.) Andy Reid keeps saying this is not about him. But the players are saying they want to win it for him. This is obviously the major story line and Reid can’t avoid it. Chiefs fans are excited and they’re backing their head coach. About what you’d expect.

Jovan Alford: What can Philadelphia Eagles fans expect from the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night on the offensive and defensive side of the ball?

Joel Thorman: Offensively the Chiefs are not going to challenge you deep very often. They’re going to take what you give them underneath, your slants, backs in the flat and drags. Alex Smith will take a sack before throwing a risky pass. The Chiefs take advantage of their opportunities — 5-for-5 in the red zone. Defensively the Chiefs are looking really good. Two legit pass rushers in Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. Two cornerbacks who can cover in Sean Smith and Brandon Flowers. Dontari Poe, the nose tackle, is the key to the whole thing. He’s having a monster two-game stretch with 3.5 sacks.

Jovan Alford:  Is the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense prepared to face Kelly’s offense and does it pose any problems?

Joel Thorman: This Eagles offense against the Chiefs defense will be a fun match-up. Football nerds should like this one. Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton will bring pressure from multiple places. Poe’s pass-rushing ability allows them some versatility. They have a good defense that can stay on the field, which is key against Philly. The biggest problem for Philly will be containing Dontari Poe. If he can bring pressure up the middle, that’s a game-changer against a quarterback like Michael Vick, who is so hard to contain.

Jovan Alford: How has first round pick Eric Fischer been playing so far three weeks into the season?

Joel Thorman: He’s been OK. Not great, but not bad either. He had one really bad preseason game that made some folks concerned but he’s turned it around since then. He’s obviously a rookie and will get better but there are not major red flags right now. He has been banged up early on but appears to be healthy (or healthier) now.

Jovan Alford:  Finally, what will be the keys to victory for the Chiefs to win on Thursday night?

Joel Thorman: Turnovers. The Chiefs have yet to turn the ball over this season. If they don’t turn it over, this game is going to be close. That’s what it comes down to for me. Through two games the Chiefs have shown they will not beat themselves. That’s the key.
