Last Monday, the Philadelphia Phillies released outfielder Tony Gwynn Jr. after they designated him for assignment but he is back with the organization. According to CSN Philly’s Jim Salisbury, the Phillies signed him to a minor league deal and he will go to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
We all understand that this is not a huge move but it gives the Phillies some depth in the outfield in the organization. In 67 games with the Phillies this season, Gwynn Jr. has a .163/.281./.204 slash line. He also has three RBI and two stolen bases in 119 plate appearances.
If someone does get hurt with the big league club before John Mayberry Jr. comes back off of the 15-day DL, then expect Gwynn Jr. to be the first one called up.
