The Philadelphia Phillies have signed signed right-hander Sean O’Sullivan, outfielders Dave Sappelt and Tony Gwynn Jr. and catcher Lou Marson to minor league deals with invitations to Spring Training.
Sean O’Sullivan, 26 years old, had a 3.96 ERA in seven appearances with the San Diego Padres last season. That’s pretty good, but he walked 14 batters and only struck 12 out. That is very bad, it’s obvious that he has major control issues.
Dave Sappelt, 26 years old, hit .240/.269/.280 in 78 plate appearances for the Cubs in 2013. That’s not good at all. He has never had much success in the Major Leagues; Sappelt is a career .251/.301/.343 hitter in 274 big league plate appearances. He has proven to be a good player in Triple-A though, batting .279/.332/.402 in 1356 plate appearances.
Tony Gwynn Jr., 31 years old, spent most of his time with the Dodgers’ Triple-A team last season, where he hit .300/.393/.384, to go along with two home runs and 12 stolen bases. He’s a great defender, and he adds to the Phillies’ center-field depth.
Lou Marson, 27 years old, has some experience with the Phillies’ organization. They actually drafted him in 2004, and eventually went on to trade him to the Indians in 2008; that trade was a trade that sent Cliff Lee to Philadelphia. Marson is a .219/.309/.299 career hitter in 882 Major League plate appearances. He spent most of the 2013 season on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation.
