According to multiple reports, the Philadelphia Phillies have signed pitcher Roberto Hernandez to a one year deal. This deal is worth $4.5 million guaranteed, and it includes some incentives; Hernandez will earn $200K for reaching 140 and 155 innings pitched, $300K for reaching 170 and 185 innings pitched, and $500K for reaching 200 innings pitched. Hernandez, formerly known as Fausto Carmona, is 33 years old. This upcoming season will be his 8th in the major leagues, so he’s pretty experienced. Hernandez had an earned run average of 4.89 with the Rays last season, which is pretty bad. There were times over the course of Hernandez’s career that it seemed like he had reached his potential; he was fourth in Cy Young voting in 2007 and he was an all-star in 2010. Those were the only good seasons of his career, and they were very good.
It is very likely that Hernandez will be the Phillies’ fifth starter in the 2014 season, behind Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Kyle Kendrick, and Miguel Alfredo-Gonzalez. Hernandez will be a good fifth starter, I think. He’s done well in the big leagues before, and that was in the American League. The National League, where he is now with Philadelphia, is thought of as a better league for pitchers. I’m expecting a good season out of Hernandez in 2014.
