After much talk about the San Diego Chargers not being able to agree to a contract extension with franchise quarterback Philip Rivers, the two finally hammered out a deal on Saturday keeping their 2004 1st round pick in a Bolts uniform until 2019.
The deal includes a 4-year contract extension worth $83.24 million with $65 million guaranteed.
This is a good move for the Chargers. They keep the face of their franchise, and one of the top QBs in the NFL. Rivers is the heart and soul of a franchise that has a losing record only once with No. 17 under center.
Since 2006, the Chargers have made the playoffs five times, including a 14-2 record in 2007, second only to the undefeated New England Patriots, whom they met in the AFC Championship game.
In that game, Rivers essentially, played with one leg.
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers hung in despite a torn ligament in his knee.
Who knows if a healthy San Diego squad would have won that game, it’s difficult to tell. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson didn’t play after the first two offensive snaps of the game for San Diego, Rivers was on one leg, and tight end Antonio Gates played with a dislocated toe.
If you saw that game, then you couldn’t help but admire the toughness of Philip Rivers. He gave his everything for his team and city.
Rivers has never missed a regular season game since taking over the reigns of the franchise in 2006, and in that span, the Bolts are 88-56, and now he’s a Charger until 2019, and that’s a good thing for San Diego.
