This is no typo. The Philadelphia Phillies actually beat the Atlanta Braves. The Phillies entered this game having a record of 3-17 in their last 20 games. The Braves record in their last 20 games was 17-3. This Phillies win was also even more rare, because Cole Hamels got a win! There was also some history made: this was Charlie Manuel’s 1000th victory as a manger.
This game started out on a 1 hour and 47 minute delay. In the first inning of the game, both teams went down 123. In the top of the third inning with one out, Cole Hamels came up. What did he do? You guessed it, he hit a triple! He was then driven in on a Jimmy Rollins single, and the Phillies were up 1-0. The score was 1-0 until the sixth inning, when Cody Asche hit a 3 run home run! That was his second major league home run. The Phillies were then up 4-0! You think this is a lock in most games, but Cole Hamels never seems to be able to win games, so you never know here folks. In the top of the 9th inning the Phillies did score another insurance run on a Carlos Ruiz single that scored Cody Asche. Cole Hamels went out for the ninth inning, and let up a run, but ended up completing the game!
Cole Hamels Complete Line: 9 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 9 K. Finally good enough for him to get a win! He was great today, and silenced the Braves bats, something that is very hard to do. I questioned the choice to send Hamels out for the 9th inning, because Phillies manager Charlie Manuel has been known to be very wrong about things. I guess he was right. This was probably the best game Cole Hamels has pitched this year, it was great. His ERA is down to 3.65.
I found an interesting fact about Cole Hamels: He has as many quality starts as Max Scherzer this year. Cole Hamels has a record of 5-13, and Scherzer has a record of 17-1 (Per @Jordan1Hall).

Braves starter Julio Tehran was doing really well in this game, until the Phillies 3 run sixth inning. He went 6 innings and gave up 4 earned runs.
This was a really nice win for the Phillies, because they haven’t had many good games recently, but they finally won a game. Tomorrow Ethan Martin will start for the Phillies, and pitch against the Braves, the team that he made his major league debut against. He did absolutely terrible in that game, so let’s hope that he does better this time. Kris Medlen is pitching for the Braves tomorrow.
