Phillies bats wake up..defeat Arizona 9-5

After playing for over seven hours and 18 innings, perhaps the Phillies bats might be asleep, as well as
the players, especially with Patrick Corbin pitching today. However, the Phillies jumped on Corbin early, and
cruised to a 9-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbcks, at Citizen Bank Park.
With Arizona up 1-0, the Phillies got it going in the bottom half, as Roger Bernardina led off by being
hit by a pitch. With one out, Michael Young lined a single to center, and soon after Erik Kratz walked to load
the bases. On the first pitch, Darin Ruf lined a single to left that scored Bernardina, and tied the game, 1-1.
The Phils extended the lead to 3-1, as Cody Asche lined a double to right that scored both Young and Kratz.
Finally, the Phillies made it 4-1, courtesy of a Kevin Frandsen ground out.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, and with the lead cut to 4-2, Kevin Frandsen got a one out single,
and then advanced to second a on a Didi Gregorius throwing error. Then, John Mayberry jumped on a 2-0 fastball,
and crushed deep into the left field seats, for his 10th home run of the season, and giving the Phillies, a
6-2 lead.
Then, in the sixth inning, Asche, who had two hits and two rbi’s on the day, led off with a single.
Frandsen, then reached on a error by Corbin, and that was followed by a Mayberry walk, which loaded the bases.
Then, pinch-hitter Chase Utley grounded a single to right, and that made the score, 7-2. Arizona brought in
Heath Bell, who replaced Corbin, but he didn’t help his own cause, as Bernardina, who made two great catches
today in the field, including taking away a home run to centerfield, lined a double to right that scored two more,
and made it 9-2 after six innings.
Another big part of Sunday’s game was Roy Halladay. Halladay, who was suppose to start in Reading for the
(AA) Reading Fightin Phils, had to start for the Phillies due to the seven hour game on Saturday night, and he had
a respectful outing going six innings, four hits, two runs, two walks and two strike outs, in a winning effort.
Corbin, on the other hand, who is one of the better pitchers in the National League, was scorched today.
He went 5 1/3 innings, seven hits, nine runs (eight earned), three walks and four strikeouts, not to mention he
gave up a home run and hit a batter.
The Phillies will now go on the road, as they begin a four-game series against the New York Mets, with
Cliff Lee going against Zack Wheeler. Fir
