This afternoon, the Phillies were looking for the three game series sweep versus the 1st place division leading Washington Nationals. If the Phillies get the sweep this gives them tons of motivation and a little bit closer to the NL Wild Card.

The first four innings of this game there was no score but then in the bottom of the fifth, Phillies starting pitcher Cliff Lee, who was looking for his first home win of the season hit a double to deep center and third baseman Kevin Frandsen scored. With the Phillies up 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Jimmy Rollins came up to bat and crushed a two run home run to right field and would put the Phillies up 3-0 over the Nats.

The Phillies’ offense gave Cliff Lee a comfortable lead as he was dealing against the Nats’ hitters. Then in the sixth inning, Laynce Nix would hit a solo home run that got out of Citizens Bank Park quickly as the Phillies would push their lead up to 4-0. In the seventh inning, Cliff Lee would find himself in trouble as he Jayson Werth would get on base then Adam LaRoche came up and crushed a ball that looked like it was going to be a two run home run but it wasn’t. Somehow, some way, the ball bounced on top of the fence and came back into play. LaRoche would be out at first and Werth would be safe at third.

After LaRoche would be Tyler Moore, who would hit get a base hit to put the Nationals on the board. Up 4-1, Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee got on the phone and pitchers Josh Lindblom and Jeremy Horst started to warmup. Lee would make it out the seventh inning and have a great outing.

In the eighth and ninth innings, the combination of Lindblom and Horst would shut down the Nationals’ hitters, Josh Lindblom would end up getting the five out save for Phillies.

The Phillies end up sweeping the Washington Nationals and winning today’s game 4-1. Cliff Lee as I stated earlier pitched a tremendous game going seven innings, giving up seven hits, one earned, and five strikeouts. The Phillies record stands at 61-67 and they are looking to continue their winning streak Tuesday night versus the New York Mets.
