The deal includes a $4.5 million club option or $500,000 buyout for 2017. He also has the opportunity to earn $500,000 per season if he starts in 125 games, something that the 34 year old catcher has never done before.
I am not a fan of this deal. He is 34 years old, and the Phillies signed him to a three year deal, where he is making $8.66 million dollars per year. He will be a 38 year old catcher at the start of his final season on contract, and he’s due $8.66 million dollars that year; I don’t like the sound of that at all.
Well now the Phillies have their 2014 starting lineup seemingly set in stone, they just need to find some pitching help and fill some spots on the coaching staff.
