In some more shocking news in the Philadelphia Sports World as if anything could not get worse. Phillies all-star catcher Carlos Ruiz was suspended for the first 25 games of the 2013 MLB season due to testing positive for amphetamines.
Ruiz had a great season for the Phils he was the only bright spot on the team. He had career highs in batting average (.325), slugging percentage (.540), home runs (16), and RBIs (68). This was a shock to many Phillies fans as Ruiz has become one of the fan favorites.
In a statement released by Carlos Ruiz through the players’ association, he said, “I am sincerely regretful for my mistake in taking a prohibited stimulant.” He continued to say, “I apologize to my teammates, the Phillies organization and the Philadelphia fans.”
Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said when Ruiz called him on Tuesday morning; he said that Ruiz was “Very upset and remorseful.” According to the Philadelphia Inquirer they had reported that Carlos Ruiz tested positive for Adderall, which a drug that is used to treat ADHD or Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder.
This upcoming season is Ruiz’s final year of his contract with the Phillies as he is set to make $5 million. The good news is that he will able to participate in spring training and exhibition games but the bad news is when the regular season starts he will not be eligible to play until April 28th.
