Phillies demote Cody Asche to Triple-A to learn left field

Washington Nationals v Philadelphia Phillies

Life comes at you fast and it looks like that happened to Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Cody Asche. Last night, Asche was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley as the Phillies believe that he is better suited playing left field.

This news was shocking to everybody in the clubhouse including Asche, who had this to say about his demotion, “Going forward as an organization, it’s better for me to play left field. So I’ve got to go do that.”

With Asche making the transition to left field, all signs point to 22-year-old prospect, third baseman Maikel Franco being promoted from Triple-A Lehigh Valley this weekend as the team can put off his free agency from 2020 to 2021. Currently in Triple-A, Franco is hitting .341 with four home runs and 19 RBI.

Until Franco is called up to the big league club, manager Ryne Sandberg will platoon Cesar Hernandez and Andres Blanco at third base.

Finally, Asche should be able to pick up playing in left field quickly as he did some work before Spring Training and then restarted it last month in St. Louis. This season, he is batting .245 with two home runs and four RBI. At this rate with Asche’s lack of production, the Phillies have no choice but to bring up Franco.
