The Phillies got crushed by the Tigers tonight, to lose their 7th straight game.
This game was terrible. The Phillies went down 1-2-3 in their half of the first inning, on only 7 pitches. In the bottom of the first, starting pitcher for the Phillies Raul Valdes got the first 2 Tigers hitters out, on only 6 pitches, but then came 2012 American League MVP, Miguel Cabrera. He smashed a home run to left field, and that ignited the Tigers offense. The Tigers went on to score 5 runs in that first inning, and eventually scored 3 more runs in the 2nd inning. Raul Valdes did absolutely terrible. He gave up 9 earned runs on 12 hits in only 3.2 innings. Raul Valdes is the first Phillies pitcher to give up 12 or more hits, and 9 or more earned runs in less than 4 innings since Mike Mimbs did it in 1996, according to Phillies writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer Matt Gelb. As expected, the Phillies offense was non-existent against Tigers starting pitcher Max Scherzer. He pitched 6 strong innings, allowing only 1 hit, while recording 7 strikeouts. He did not allow any runs at all today. He was simply phenomenal.
Tomorrow, the Phillies will try to bounce back and snap their 7 game losing streak with a win. The pitching match-up for the game tomorrow will be Jonathan Pettibone (5-4 3.97 ERA) and Rick Porcello (7-6 4.49 ERA). The Phillies need to score a lot of runs tomorrow, because I don’t expect a rookie (Jonathan Pettibone) to have very much success against this Tigers offense.
