The Phillies have a really bad bullpen, and they need to get some bullpen pieces to help that. Is it possible that the Phillies could help it via free agency instead of trading for bullpen help? It is.
The Phillies are going to watch former Giants closer Brian Wilson throw a bullpen session Thursday, as well as many other teams. He had Tommy John surgery just 15 months ago. In 2010, Wilson collected 48 saves for the Giants. That year, he had 93 strikeouts in 74.2 innings. That’s great. The only thing that would lead me to believe that he couldn’t return to his old self is that he is coming off of a serious injury. At this point, I think anything would help the Phillies bullpen, so I think the Phillies should go ahead and sign him. He would really help the back end of the bullpen, he could be the new setup guy. It seems that he would be the setup guy for Papelbon, and he would probably be the new closer if Papelbon was traded.
This would be a low risk, high reward move if the Phillies sign Wilson. Overall, I think it would be pretty cool to have Brian Wilson and his beard, in the Phillies bullpen.
