Phillies make a couple of moves in the starting rotation

The Philadelphia Phillies’ starting rotation has not been stellar this season. With many pitchers from the minors not named Aaron Nola being shuffled in and out of the starting staff. Today, the Phillies made two roster moves when it comes to the pitching staff.

To start, after last night’s game, the Phillies announced that they have outrighted starting pitcher Sean O’Sullivan to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Taking O’Sullivan’s place on the roster will be relief pitcher Hector Neris.

Last night, O’Sullivan was on the mound for the Phils and did not have a great game. After throwing 123 pitches in 5.1 innings, he gave up six earned runs including two monster home runs.

This season with the Phillies, O’Sullivan has a 6.08 ERA with a record of 1-6.

After O’Sullivan was outrighted, the Phillies then announced that they have designated starting pitcher Kevin Correia for assignment. Taking Correia’s spot in the rotation will be Severino Gonzalez, who will pitch on Thursday per the release.

In the few starts he had with the Phillies, Correia had a 0-3 record with a 6.56 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched. Correia was nothing more than a stop gap for the Phillies and it showed by his performance.

Finally, with Gonzalez being recalled, he has seen some time in the majors with a 3-2 record to go along with an 8.28 ERA. In his last start on June 28 against the Washington Nationals, Gonzalez received the win as he gave up four earned runs, while striking out seven over 5.1 innings pitched.
