The Phillies gave up five runs in the seventh inning to University of Tampa Sunday. The exhibition was not a good start for reliever Phillippe Aumont, but for the most part there is not too much to be overreacting about with this loss.

In the first dose of spring baseball Sunday afternoon, the Philadelphia Phillies blew a 2-0 lead to Division 2 University of Tampa.  Shortly after Ruben Amaro‘s nephew, Andrew Amaro, walked in the game-tying run, Tampa’s Giovanni Alfonzo blasted a grand slam off  Hector Neris, who had just come into the game with two outs in the seventh inning in relief of Nefi Ogando. The fact you likely do not recognize either of those two names should help ease the tension of what may come from overreacting to an exhibition loss to a college team.

What you should know:

  • Odubel Herrera led off and played center field and went 1-for-3.
  • Darin Ruf went 1-for-3 and left two runners stranded.
  • Aaron Altherr was the only Phillies player with multiple hits (2-for-4) and one RBI.
  • Tommy Joseph got the start at catcher and went 1-for-2.
  • Reliever Phillippe Aumont pitched one inning and allowed three hits. He was charged with one earned run.

The Phillies went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left nine batters on base. Grapefruit League action opens up Tuesday afternoon in Clearwater against the New York Yankees.
