Phillies reach deal with free agent Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon

If you haven’t heard already here is the breaking Philadelphia Phillies news. No its not Jimmy Rollins, and it doesn’t have to do with Ryan Madson. Sources are saying that the Phillies have reached a deal with Red Sox free agent closer Jonathan Papelbon.

Papelbon, in a couple of weeks will be 31 years old and sources say that the Phillies gave him a four year contract which could possibly be worth up to 50 million dollars, pending his physical. Papelbon last season pitched in 63 games, had pitched 64.1 innings, gave up 50 hits, 21 earned runs, 3 home runs, and all of this with a 2.94  ERA.

Over his entire career, Papelbon has 219 saves but has blown 29 saves as well, and all of this with a 2.33 ERA. So the question is: Was this the right move for the Phillies?
