The Phillies on Saturday signed utility infielder Chris Nelson to a minor league deal.
The 29-year-old infielder played for the Padres in 2014. With San Diego, he had a slash line of .233/.296/.274. In 73 at bats, he drove in 7 runs.
Nelson, a first round draft pick by the Rockies, has played in the Rockies, Yankees, Angels and Padres organizations since the 2010 campaign.
Because of the infielder’s versatility, he has a good shot at cracking the Opening Day roster, but will battle for the job during Spring Training.
