Why The Phillies Should Sign Robinson Cano

The best free agent on the market right now is former Yankees second baseman, Robinson Cano. He is looking for a very big contract, and there are only a few teams that can afford him, and one team that can is the Philadelphia Phillies.

Cano had a slash line of .314/.383./.516 last season, and he also had 27 home runs. That’s really good. He also played some solid defense. The only issue he has on the playing field is that he’s not very fast, but that’s something that any team can look past; it’s not a huge issue. The main problem with Cano is that he wants a ton of money; he wants about a nine year, $260 million dollar deal. While that may be very unreasonable, the Phillies are signing a new television deal soon, so they have a lot of money to spend, and Phillies’ General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. is the kind of person that would give Cano a contract like that.

You’re probably wondering where Cano would fit into the Phillies’ lineup, because they already have Chase Utley. Well, Chase Utley is capable of playing third base, so the Phillies could just move Utley there and have Cano play second base. If that’s the route that they will take then that would push Cody Asche out of the lineup, but that’s okay because the Phillies would have Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, and Chase Utley in their lineup, and they’re veterans that get injured a lot and need a lot of breaks, so Asche would still get a good amount of playing time. Another route that the Phillies could take would be to trade Ryan Howard and have Chase Utley play first base. The first route is more likely.

I think that Cano could turn the Phillies into a great team. If the Phillies sign Cano, then their 2014 lineup will most likely include Chase Utley, Robinson Cano, Ben Revere, Domonic Brown, and Marlon Byrd. Those players are five good hitters. That would be a tremendous lineup, so the Phillies should do whatever it takes to bring Robinson Cano to Philadelphia.
