The Phillies beat the Giants by the score of 7-3 today, to end their 8 game losing streak.
As I expected, the Phillies offense did explode off of Barry Zito, and John Lannan had a very good start. Barry Zito gave up 4 earned runs in only 3.1 innings. John Lannan pitched 7 very strong innings, giving up just 3 earned runs. Lannan continued his dominance of the Giants. In the first inning, Pablo Sandoval hit a sac fly, to give the Giants the 1-0 lead. The lead didn’t last long at all, because in the bottom of the first inning Delmon Young hit an RBI single, to tie the game. Later that inning, Zito walked John Mayberry Jr. with the bases loaded, that gave Phillies the 2-1 lead. That slim lead didn’t last long, when Sandoval hit a bloop single that drove in Andres Torres, to tie the game. In the bottom of the 4th inning, Carlos Ruiz hit a 2 run line drive home run, to give the Phillies the lead that would hold until the end of the game. Michael Young went 2-4 with a home run and a single. If today was his last game as a Phillie, then he would be leaving on a good note.
Tomorrow, the pitching match-up is Chad Gaudin (4-2, 2.77 ERA) for the Giants, and Kyle Kendrick (9-7, 3.96 ERA) for the Phillies.
