The Pittsburgh Pirates completed a minor trade with the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, acquiring outfielder Bryce Brentz for cash considerations.
The 29-year old Brentz, a right-handed hitter, smacked 31 homers with an .863 in Triple-A last season.
Brentz has 34 games of MLB experience in which he slashed .287/.311/.377 with a homer and nine RBI to his credit. He appeared in nine games for Boston in 2014 and 25 in 2016.
He was selected by the Red Sox in the first round (36th overall) of the 2010 draft.
The Red Sox had to clear a spot on the 40-man roster after inking J.D. Martinez to a deal on Monday.
Nick Burdi was transferred to 60-day DL to open 40-man roster spot for Brentz.
This is not the outfield addition many had in mind, but it is what it is.
Teams make these kind of moves all the time as it’s likely Brentz will initially provide outfield depth in the minors should the Pirates need it during the season.
It’s worth noting though that Brentz is out of options so if he doesn’t make the Opening Day roster he has to be placed on waivers, so he will be thrown into the left field battle.
He’s got a little bit of pop so it will be interesting to see how long of a look he gets.
