On Thursday night, the Pirates and the Cardinals played game one of the NLDS. The Cardinals won rather convincingly in front of their hometown crowd.
The first 2 1/2 innings of this game were scoreless. In the bottom of the third though, Carlos Beltran hit a three run homer and that gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, A.J. Burnett walked Jon Jay and that forced a run in. The next batter was David Freese, and he hit a single and then the game was 7-0. This would spell the end for A.J. Burnett, as he was then relieved by Jeanmar Gomez. This might have been A.J. Burnett’s last start with the Pirates.
As you can see, A.J. Burnett didn’t have a good start, but how did the starter for the Cardinals, Adam Wainwright do? He threw 7 innings, gave up 1 earned run and struck out 9 batters. That’s a typical Adam Wainwright start.
The Pirates would go on to score one run on a Pedro Alvarez home run, but that was the only run that they had on the night, and the Cardinals went on to win 9-1.
