Pitching staff shake-ups continue for the Pittsburgh Pirates, who announced that Tyler Glasnow and Dovydas Neverauskas were optioned to AAA Indianapolis.
After giving up seven runs in his start last night, the Pittsburgh Pirates are pulling the plug (all-be-it temporarily) in the great Tyler Glasnow experiment. The team announced early this afternoon that they have optioned the right-hander to their AAA ball club, the Indianapolis Indians. He won’t be taking that trip alone however. Lithuanian reliever Dovydas Neverauskas, who was called up June 8 to replace Johnny Barbato, who was sent down to Indy in a corresponding move, is also headed back to Circle City.
In last night’s 12-7 loss to the Miami Marlins, the team’s fourth in a row, Glasnow gave up seven runs in four innings. In 65 pitches he gave up 10 hits, 7 runs, struck out one and coughed up two homers. His ERA is now 7.45.
Shaking Up the Staff
Its the latest in a spate of shake-ups to the pitching staff. Yesterday, the team announced that beleaguered closer Tony Watson was relieved of those duties. Felipe Rivero, who has been lights out in the set-up role, and Juan Nicasio will split closer activities for now. Watson will continue to work from the bullpen, but in less high-leverage spots.
The Pirates have not announced any coordinating moves thus far. However, according to Stephen Nesbitt from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Jameson Taillon, is slated for a return to the big league club and start Monday against the Colorado Rockies. Chad Kuhl has been bumped back into Glasnow’s spot in the rotation, Nesbitt reported.

Taillon has been out since early May when he underwent surgery for testicular cancer. In his last rehab start for the Indy Indians on Wednesday, he threw 97 pitches total (67 for strikes), striking out 9 batters in six innings’ work, allowing 5 runs and issuing 2 walks.
Reliever Edgar Santana is said to be making his way from Indianapolis to Pittsburgh today. The Club has not yet confirmed that move. If true, they will need to clear a spot for him on the 40-man roster.
