Kang’s latest DL stint involves a left shoulder injury sustained in last night’s 6-5 loss to the Miami Marlins. The reported timetable of Kang’s return is two to four weeks.
Kang missed the entire month of April after undergoing knee surgery in September. The 29-year old has struggled this season, hitting just .243 with 14 home runs and 41 RBI in 77 games. Kang has stepped up as of late, hitting .350 with three home runs and four RBI in his last seven games.
In a corresponding move, the Pirates have recalled first baseman Josh Bell from Triple-A Indianapolis.

With David Freese now taking the solo reigns over at third base in Kang’s absence, the return of Bell to the Pirates major league roster gives them more depth at the first base position. Bell will likely split time starting over at first base with John Jaso.
In four career major league games, Bell is a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, four RBI, two walks and three runs scored. Despite the brief amount of success, Bell has yet to make his first MLB start, something that will likely change sooner rather than later.
