Not the retired DH/catcher Javy Lopez, but rather the LOOGY Javier Lopez, per the PG. Lopez was awful with Boston last year and spent a good amount of time in Pawtuckett, but he was a fairly solid left-handed option out of their pen between 2006 and 2008. Over his career he’s been very tough on lefties, which is what the Pirates need in their bullpen. It’s unlikely this deal is for a ton of money, so it’s probably a decent signing for the Pirates.
