Pirates, Yankees Complete Ivan Nova Trade

Prospects Tito Polo and Stephen Tarpley are headed to the Yankees as part of the Ivan Nova deal.

Here’s a closer look at the prospects given up by the Pirates.

Tito Polo

Polo, a 22 year-old outfielder, started the year in Low A West Virginia.  In 54 games, he slashed .302/.368/.551 while hitting 12 home runs and stealing 20 bases.  He was then called up to Bradenton where he slashed .276/.351/.346 with four home runs and 17 steals in 55 games.  Although he still got on base after the call up to Bradenton, the power did take a dip.  All in all, Tito Polo was a nice little piece in the Pirates system but as we know, the Pirates are abundantly deep with outfielders and Polo was eventually going to be blocked.

Stephen Tarpley

Tarpley was originally acquired by the Pirates in the Travis Snider trade.  The 23 year-old lefty has been pitching with Bradenton all season.  In 100 innings, Tarpley is 6-4 with a 4.32 ERA.  He had 90 strikeouts opposed to 37 walks.  Tarpley was an interesting prospect as left-handed starting pitching is hard to come by.  That being said, the Pirates did acquire Taylor Hearn at the deadline, a hard throwing lefty who also has potential to start.

Meanwhile…

Ivan Nova is 4-0 with a 2.87 ERA in five starts with the Pirates.  He has struck out 22 batters while walking only one.  After giving up two home runs in his Pirate debut, Nova has given up only one home run.

The 2016 Trade Deadline is officially in books for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
