Pittsburgh Pirates Finalize 2017 Opening 25-Man Roster

The Pittsburgh Pirates have finalized their 2017 Opening Day 25-man roster

The Pittsburgh Pirates wrapped up Spring play yesterday in Montreal. Today, they finalized their Opening Day 25-man roster in advance of tomorrow’s season opener.

Osuna optioned

Overall, none of this is a real surprise, though many fans will be upset to see that Jose Osuna will not make the club after a tremendous spring. Osuna slashed .407/.492/.759 during camp. He led the team with five home runs and 17 RBI during Grapefruit League play.

Osuna already faced two strikes in his quest to making the club before Spring Training even began. The club brought in Phil Gosselin to serve as a primary utility backup to replace the role that Sean Rodriguez filled so admirably last season. Alen Hanson was out of options and still has enough value in the eyes of the Pittsburgh Pirates to perhaps see one last look to see how he can adjust to big league pitching.

With Adam Frazier, John Jaso and Chris Stewart all but guaranteed a spot, the cards were stacked against Osuna, but he did turn in a quality camp that will have him ready to serve as a primary depth option at both outfield and first base.
