Rodriguez played for the Pirates from 2015-2016 before signing a two-year deal with the Braves this past offseason. Following the signing of his deal, he and his family were in a major car accident. Rodriguez missed a bulk of this season and only appeared in 15 games for the Braves. In only 47 at-bats, he hit .162/.326/.351/.677 with two home runs and three RBIs.
This move likely improves both the Pirates’ bench and their overall team defense. Rodriguez is a true utility man and can play various positions at an average to above average level. He is also signed through next season, so this move could not only help with the current Pirates team but could give them a stronger bench in 2018 as well.
Sources they that in order to acquire Rodriguez, the Pirates went over 1B/OF prospect Connor Joe. Joe was the 39th pick in the 2014 MLB Draft. He slashed .257/.352/.361/.713 in three Minor League seasons.
