Continues to Add to Skill Set
An important thing for young players to keep in mind is that they need to continually add to their skill set. Frazier has done that on the base paths. Coming into this season Frazier never stole more than 14 bases in a season and had only 53 steal attempts in his first 282 minor league games.
He was challenged by Indianapolis manager Dean Treanor to get more aggressive on the base paths and it has paid off. Frazier stole 17 bases at Triple A before his call up and has already swiped four bags with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He has the look of a guy who could be a potential leadoff hitter in the future and adding the stolen base to his repertoire makes Frazier even more valuable. While a guy like Hanson can steal bags, Frazier can do that and a lot more.
Adjustments
This will be the biggest key on whether or not Frazier can establish himself as an MLB regular. Frazier is in his first mini-slump, going just one for his last 12.
Making adjustments on the fly usually separates legit major league players from the 4-A type of players. There’s also the approach at the plate.
You would like to see Frazier draw a few more walks. To this point he has put up just a 5 percent walk rate and ideally you would hope that number at least doubles as he goes through the league.
If he can improve in just a couple of small areas, it would be hard to envision Frazier not wearing a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform for a long time to come.
