The Pittsburgh Pirates announced today that they have called up IF/OF Jason Rogers from Triple-A Indianapolis. To make room on the 25-man roster, the team also optioned Cole Figueroa down to Triple-A.
Rogers was optioned down to the minors at the end of the Spring Training, but has absolutely tore up Triple-A pitching so far in 2016 as he is currently hitting .366BA/.435OBP/.683SLG/1.118OPS with three home runs and 10 RBI. With the release of Michael Morse, the Pirates clearly had a bench opening and Rogers played his way onto the big league team.
Rogers was acquired this past offseason from the Milwaukee Brewers for Keon Broxton and many expected he was going to have a chance to compete for the starting first base job in Spring Training. He had a fairly up and down exhibition season, especially defensively and ended up losing his job as the starting first baseman to John Jaso and his spot on the bench to the more defensively talented Cole Figueroa.
Rogers is expected to join the team in Arizona, where he will be active as the team begins a three game series against the Diamondbacks at 9:40pm eastern time.
