Our 40 in 40 series, which take a look at each player on the 40 man roster for the Pittsburgh Pirates, continues today with a look at Chris Bostick.
Bostick made his MLB-debut last season when he appeared in 20 games where he slashed .296/.406/.370 in 32 plate appearances.
He’s not much of a prospect. But got the call-up last season after hitting .294/.362/.418 with seven homers at Triple-A Indianapolis. Bostick mainly got the call because the Pirates’ roster was so thin.
That shouldn’t be the case this season as if Bostick is in a Pirates uniform, things have gone horribly wrong or the club has been bitten terribly by the injury bug.
Bostick was originally drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 44th round in 2011 from high school.
After hitting .282/.352/.452 with 25 steals in the Midwestern League in 2013, Bostick was traded to the Texas Rangers. He was then shipped to the Washington Nationals in 2015 and acquired by the Pirates prior to the 2017 season.
He’s a second baseman, but can also play third base or left field if needed.
Nowhere to play
It actually would be interesting to see Bostick stick on the 40-man roster after spring training.
He really has no clear path to the majors.
With Josh Harrison, Adam Frazier and Sean Rodriguez all able to play second base on the 25-man roster, there’s no need for Bostick.
With Max Moroff, Kevin Kramer, Kevin Newman and Cole Tucker all coming fast through the minor leagues, there’s no real position for Bostick to play in Indianapolis as well.
Truthfully, Moroff is going to have the same situation if he doesn’t make the Opening Day roster so finding Bostick at bats in the infield will be very challenging.
He’s built in the super-sub role, but the Pirates have enough of those players currently.
The 24-year old Bostick does have some ability, but he has a lot of other guys blocking his path so I don’t believe there will ever be a future for him in Pittsburgh.
