Pittsburgh Pirates claim Yoervis Medina off waivers from Cubs

The Pittsburgh Pirates added another low-cost relief option this off-season by claiming young right-handed relief arm Yoervis Medina, who was recently placed on waivers by the Chicago Cubs.

Medina profiles as a hard-throwing right hander whose four-seam fastball can touch the mid-90s. In a total of 146 innings in parts of five major league seasons, Medina has posted a 3.08 ERA backed by a 3.78 FIP.

Medina continues a Pirate trend towards low-cost/middle-to-high ceiling relievers that started last year with the acquisitions of Arquimedes Caminero and Radhames Liz. This trend has continued this year with Medina, Guido Knudson, and Jorge Rondon.

In analyzing Medina’s pitch selection, he primarily relies on a four-seam fastball but has thrown a sinking fastball in the past before completely abandoning it in 2015. He also mixes in a curveball and a rarely-used changeup.

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ 40-man roster is currently full, so a corresponding roster move will need to happen, but that has yet to be announced.
