2016 Pittsburgh Pirates Sunday Alternate Uniforms a fitting Hat-Tip to 1979
There was the wait for pitchers and catchers to report, the wait to see Jung Ho Kang in a batting cage, the wait for a glimpse of newcomers Jon Niese and John Jaso at Pirate City, and quite possibly the most agonizing wait of them all – the wait to see where, when, and how the Pittsburgh Pirates would roll out gold jerseys. Remember those jerseys? The ones accidentally included in an innocent tweet about gearing up for Spring Training from Pirates Clubhouse Manager Scott Bonnett? The one that was deleted almost immediately, but still made the Twitter rounds for a few days thanks to eagle-eyed Pirates fans who took a screenshot of the jerseys, in all their golden glory, hanging alongside the much maligned camo ones?
Today, the wait came to an end.
Pirates fans were treated to a first glimpse of the jerseys – and entire throwback uniform – through Pittsburgh sports media covering spring training and the various and sundry activities associated with the beginning of a new baseball season (like scoreboard recordings and photo shoots). And they were marvelous!

The Buccos released a video and sweet infographic related to the entire uniform, noting the ways they nodded to the past, while also keeping with the latest trends in baseball gear. Along with the gold pullover jerseys, the uni will include beltless black pants with gold piping as well as a pillbox cap.

To accompany the new look, the team also compiled a nice pictorial history of Pirates uniforms dating back to 1902, before even “PBC” for Pittsburgh Baseball Club was featured (GIF featured, click here to view both infographics in their original form).

No word yet on how the players feel about the new Sunday alternates, but one of the Communications new kids on the Block chimed in with a request:
Now if we can only get the warmup jackets and the mesh lids… Pretty please? pic.twitter.com/aUU81Wjk4h

And a suggestion…
And maybe, just maybe @ROOTSPORTSPIT will let us wear this on Sundays? pic.twitter.com/I1ysCamwDZ

(Good luck getting Bob Walk into that!)
For those fans at home wishing to replicate this look, never fear, the Pirates rolled out gold jerseys for purchase at their online store today. They say that stock will be available at PNC Park and McKechnie Clubhouse stores tomorrow.
