In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Yesterday it was reported that the Pirates have a deal with highly touted outfielder Fabricio Macias from Mexico.
John Dreker of Pirates Prospects reported that the Pirates are expected to announce the signing of the 19-year old on Wednesday.
Macias has been on the Pirates radar for some time and just completed a two-week stint in the Dominican Republic in front of scouts where several teams showed a lot of interest.
He won an award last season given to the top player in Mexico under the age of 23 and just played in the top summer league in Mexico where he hit .318/.351/.382 in 73 games.
This is a nice signing for the Pirates, who also signed Macias’ teammate Fernando Villegas last week.
Pirates make a trade
While Macias won’t be competing for an MLB job any time soon, the Pirates did make a deal yesterday to bring in another outfielder to camp when they acquired 29-year old Bryce Brentz from the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations.
You can read our story on the trade for more information on Brentz, who has a little pop in his bat, hitting 31 homers with an .863 in Triple-A last season.
Brentz isn’t the flashy move that many Pirates fans wanted, but there is nothing wrong with this trade.
He will be given an opportunity to compete for the left field job, or a bench role, as he is out of options and must clear waivers if he doesn’t make the Opening Day roster.
Here’s a little from Brentz following the trade as Rob Biertempfel spoke to him at Pirates City.
