In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
The only real action the Pittsburgh Pirates have been involved in this offseason have been the Gerrit Cole trade rumors. While rumored talks with the New York Yankees seemed to be cooling off just a couple of days ago, it looks like those talks could be heating up once again.
Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reported that a Cole deal “Isn’t a matter of if but when,” the Pirates pull the trigger.
Sources: The New York Yankees are working on a deal to acquire starting pitcher Gerrit Cole from the Pittsburgh Pirates. Sides are talking, and while a final package has not come together, there is confidence. “A matter of when rather than if,” one source said.

While the Yanks don’t want to part with top prospect shortstop Gleyber Torres, Passen’s source notes that there are plenty of other pieces the Yanks can offer to get a deal done.
However with the Yankees just recently signing C.C. Sabathia to a one-year deal, acquiring Cole would give them six starting pitchers. That would likely lead to Jordan Montgomery starting the year in Triple-A if he isn’t part of a trade package for Cole.
Passen also notes that if the Yankees do not acquire Cole, another team is expected to step up and make a deal for the 27-year old right hander and he expects Cole to be moved within the week.
With Torres likely not to be included in a deal, outfielders Clint Frazier and Estevan Florial, plus pitchers Chance Adams and Justus Sheffield, along with third base prospect Miguel Andujar would all make nice returns for Pirates general manager Neal Huntington.
With the holiday season upon us, it could be a Merry Christmas for Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and possibly Huntington to if he nets a big haul for Cole.
