In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Yesterday was “Talk like a Pirate day,” but it was another “Play like the Pittsburgh Pirates Day” for the PBC.
In losing 1-0 to the Milwaukee Brewers, the Pirates have now lost 12 of their last 13 games, scoring 22 runs in the process. That comes out to be just 1.69 runs per game.
Not much else to say right now so let’s move on to something intriguing.
Glasnow scheduled to work as a releiver
Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle intimated recently that Tyler Glasnow would be scheduled to pitch in relief tonight, piggybacking off of Steven Brault‘s scheduled start.
This is peculiar. Even with the club having conceded a postseason appearances long ago, you don’t often see scheduled relief appearances in September. Still, the Pirates need as many data points on Glasnow as they possibly can get.
We mused prior to the season that should Glasnow’s future indeed be as a top-shelf relief arm, it would not be the worst thing in the world. The same formula of changing a struggling starter into a dominant reliever was famously applied to Dellin Betances, Aroldis Chapman and of course, Andrew Miller. From that piece:
[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”” link=”” color=”” class=”” size=””]For the Pittsburgh Pirates specifically, Glasnow’s inability to develop his changeup may start them towards at least considering how Glasnow might look as a lights-out reliever. With a fastball that can touch 98 to go along with a curveball that has good separation and bite, Glasnow can immediately become a very effective arm. He could even take on a Miller-like role. Moving Glasnow to the pen would not be admitting failure on his part or the organization’s. Rather, it would be more about embracing his strengths and utilizing him as a weapon.[/perfectpullquote]Even with his foibles and follies, Tyler Glasnow is still a weapon. It will be up to the Pittsburgh Pirates to either sharpen it for lengthier battles or deploy it in a more effective manner.
Regardless, fans will have something interesting to watch for tonight.
