In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.
Yesterday the Pittsburgh Pirates fell to the dreaded Cincinnati Reds by a score of 7-2. Jameson Taillon started the game on the mound for the Pirates, once again looking human.
In fact, last night’s start was easily the worst on the young season for Taillon. He gave up two home runs during his five innings of work, including one to light-hitting – but always Pirates-killing – Billy Hamilton. All told, Taillon gave up right hits in those five innings, walking one and striking out six.

Over this past three starts, Taillon has not completed six innings, and has been stymied by the Reds and the Yankees (with a good start against the enigmatic Marlins thrown in). While no one would dream of going anywhere near the panic button at this point, it is fair to acknowledge that Taillon may be growing through some growing pains. And that can be considered a good thing for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Looking back at his debut season, the right-hander never really strung together a grouping of starts such as these three. To be sure, he had a few clunkers sprinkled in among his first 18 starts, but only once in 2016 did Taillon have back-to-back starts with less than six innings pitched to go along with three or more earned runs.
You often hear the phrase that a starting pitcher “gave his team a chance to win” even if they do not last into a game’s latter innings or if they do not have their best stuff.
That is exactly what Jameson Taillon is doing, and if this is what his “growing pains” look like, then his future is bright indeed.
