The Pittsburgh Pirates made a minor move before Thursday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, claiming right-handed pitcher Jesus Liranzo from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Liranzo was immediately assigned to Double-A Altoona where he will pitch out of the bullpen.
The 23-year old right-hander was DFA’s by the Baltimore Orioles prior to Opening Day before being traded to the Dodgers.
The Pirates had a couple of spots open on the 40-man roster so it was only a matter of time before they scooped up a couple of players off the waiver wire.
The report on Liranzo is that he has a power arm, but struggles with control.
He posted a 4.85 ERA in 65 innings at Double-A last year, with 10.4 K/9 and 6.0 BB/9.
Over the course of five minor league seasons, Liranzo has walked 5.5 batters per nine innings.
He was rated as the Orioles 19th best prospect after last season by Baseball America.
After the Liranzo signing, the Pirates still have two spots open on the 40-man roster.
