Pittsburgh Pirates name Joey Cora new Third Base Coach

The Pittsburgh Pirates have named a new third base coach and it’s a name familiar to Pirates’ fans.

According to Cory Giger of ESPN Radio, the Pittsburgh Pirates named Joey Cora as their new third base coach for the 2017 season.

Cora managed the Altoona Curve to 76 wins and a playoff berth in 2016. The Curve came within a half game of winning their division. This is definitely a promotion for Cora as he will now find himself coaching at the Major League Level. It is always nice to see someone in the system get a well-deserved promotion.

Cora has had experience at the MLB level as he was a coach for the White Sox under Ozzie Guillen. He also was the interim manager for the Marlins in 2012 when Guillen was serving his five-game suspension.

Cora is still only 51-years-old so this very well could lead to him getting a future opportunity at the Major League Level. We’ll have to wait and see how he does as a Major League third base coach.

The Pirates still need to name a new first base coach and Pirates Breakdown will keep you posted as the Pirates fill out their coaching staff for the 2017 season.
