Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – Nothing Guaranteed for Young Starters

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

With the signing of Ivan Nova yesterday and the rumored efforts to acquire Jose Quintana from the Chicago White Sox, the Pirates are starting to put together a potential starting rotation that could have a big impact in 2017.

Now I know that I’ve talked a lot in our wake up calls this week about Nova and Quintana, but one thing I haven’t talked about is the excitement building around the amount of youth the Pirates could potentially have in their rotation and in their bullpen at the major league level this season.

One thing that is exciting to think about going into the new season is the fact that nothing is guaranteed. The only solidified rotation spots up to this point, at least in my opinion, are going to Gerrit Cole, Jameson Taillon and Nova.

If Quintana was acquired, he would get one of those rotation spots, but even if he’s not, it just opens up another opportunity for young pitchers.

At this moment in time, there are two rotation spots up for grabs. Guys like Chad Kuhl, Steven Brault, Drew Hutchison, Tyler Glasnow and Trevor Williams may have chances to earn those spots and even take spots in the bullpen. The Pirates do have a lot of pitching options, which should excite fans.

Spring Training will be an even more exciting time of year as we will see what pitchers take that extra step to earn a roster spot as not all of them will make the opening day roster.

The Pirates are currently doing what they have to in order to create a competitive ball club in 2017. Cole could very well bounce back in 2017 now that he’s healthy, Taillon took major steps after debuting in 2016, and re signing Nova was a huge step.

There is still plenty of time left in the offseason for the Pirates to make more moves, but the amount of youth mixed with a veteran like Nova will be exciting to see during the upcoming season.
