Pittsburgh Pirates Wake Up Call – The offseason gathers, and our watch begins

In our daily Wake-Up Call, we get you ready for the day with a complete look at all things Pittsburgh Pirates.

Pittsburgh Pirates fans — and baseball fans in general — have now entered the postseason. Last night, the Houston Astros won their first World Series title in franchise history. Old friend Charlie Morton continued his remarkable story by pitching four innings of one-run ball in Game Seven to seal the win.

As Jerry Seinfeld said in the classic Seinfeld episode “The Menage a’ Trois,” Oh it was a scene, man.

Veterans such as Morton, Carlos Beltran and Justin Verlander all captured their first ring. Some of the best young players in the game — Dallas Keuchel, Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and George Springer just to name a few — got their first taste of success at an enviable point in their careers.

The series was a classic one, and proved that the national pastime is alive and well. Heck, game five even outdrew Sunday Night Football.

But now, as the days grow shorter and colder, baseball’s second season — the offseason — begins. In this writer’s opinion, MLB has the best offseason in all of sports. With the Winter Meetings serving as an unofficial halfway point of sorts between the end of the World Series and Spring Training, the diehard seamheads are never waiting long for significant baseball news and movement. Fans will now watch their twitter feeds to any morsel of information on their club.

It truly is a slow burn, baseball’s Hot Stove.

We’ve written before that the Pittsburgh Pirates fave their most pivotal offseason in recent memory. Sagging attendance and encroaching fan apathy has crept in, and the team is now uniquely positioned to restore some faith and regain some  trust from its fanbase.

Doing that should be the club’s top priority.

They are now free to do just that. Their watch begins today.
