NEWS: Pittsburgh Pirates Place Jameson Taillon on 10-Day DL With Groin Discomfort

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed RHP Jameson Taillon on the 10-day Disabled List due to groin discomfort

Today the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that they have placed right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon on the 10-day DL with groin discomfort. This, via their official twitter account

The move comes as a bit of a surprise, as the Pirates announced earlier that Taillon was still considered probable for his next start as of earlier today. The move is retroactive to May 4th, which was the day after his last start.

In that start, Taillon was tagged for six earned runs off of eight hits over the span of five innings. In looking at his pitch info from that start, there was no clear sign of injury affecting velocity or movement.

Along with Ivan Nova and Gerrit Cole, Taillon has provided the Pittsburgh Pirates rotation with stability at the top. Here is a look at Taillon’s season, and career, to date:

Trevor Williams will start Monday’s contest against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Taillon’s stead. Williams has not started a game in 2017, with a four-inning mop up duty appearance against the Chicago Cubs in a blowout 14-3 loss. Williams carries a 5.35 FIP across his 11.2 innings in this season-to-date.

Josh Lindblom‘s contract was selected to replace Taillon’s spot on the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 25-man roster. Lindblom has pitched to a 2.50 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 18 innings with Triple-A Indianapolis Indians.

The 10-day DL is new to baseball this year, and has already become a hot topic. Many feel that teams abuse the new rule, while many feel that it allows players to return to action more quickly, and encourages clubs to provide more opportunities for minor league players to accrue service time.
