Things are about to get interesting for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pittsburgh Pirates might just find themselves in a very unique spot as this year’s MLB trade activity heats up.
Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish agrees with me, and he was kind enough to join us on the Pirates Breakdown Podcast.

On the Pittsburgh Pirates’ unique position of being buyers and sellers:
[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”Chris Cotillo” link=”” color=”#000000″ class=”” size=””]They are in an interesting spot. The rotation is an interesting case…I think they are in a position of power because of the market that’s out there…if you have any live bodies to move in your starting rotation, you’ll be able to get something back.[/perfectpullquote]On how the Drew Pomeranz deal might affect the market for starting pitchers:
[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”Chris Cotillo” link=”” color=”#000000″ class=”” size=””]It just sets the whole market early. The starting pitcher market is a lot weaker than it was last year…[this deal] shows you can get a guy like Espinoza in this trade market…it is Drew Pomeranz we’re talking about – despite how well he’s been pitching this year. It makes teams say, ‘ok, we have a warm body in this rotation, we have to try to move them'[/perfectpullquote]On the team’s glut of mid to top level outfield prospects and their potential inclusion in trade packages:
[perfectpullquote align=”full” cite=”Chris Cotillo” link=”#000000″ color=”” class=”” size=””]There are a lot of good major league outfielders available out there. As far as outfied prospects, teams are really looking for starting pitching this year due to the terrible starting pitching market. It would be a great situation to have those prospects, but it would be better to hold onto those if they happen to be outfielders.[/perfectpullquote]This is but a small chunk of our near 15-minute talk.
