The Pittsburgh Pirates have released right hander Casey Sadler, a 25th round pick in the 2010 draft, according to Matt Eddy of Baseball America. Eddy broke the news on Friday evening, indicating that the move actually happened back on December 30th. The team has not confirmed the move yet.
The #Pirates released RHP Casey Sadler on Dec. 30. He had Tommy John surgery in October, then outrighted off 40-man roster in November.

Sadler made six appearances with the big club in 2014 and just one last season. In his lone start in 2015, Sadler went five innings, giving up two runs while walking one and striking out five. However, is season came to an end almost as soon as it began last year when he experienced forearm pain during the summer and then underwent Tommy John surgery in early November. Due to the time frame for recovery from the surgery, Sadler was going to miss all of the 2016 season, and was scheduled to become a minor league free agent after the 2016 season, so this move isn’t too surprising.
Since Sadler was not on the 40-man roster, this does not mean a corresponding move is in the works. It more likely shows that the team has decided to move on from a pitcher who was not going to be able to contribute until 2017, and the results he had shown on the field up until this point did not give them the confidence that they needed to hang on to him. Hopefully his recovery goes well and he latches on with another club and gets a shot at reviving his baseball career.
