BREAKING NEWS: Pittsburgh Pirates release Jared Hughes

In a surprise move, Neal Huntington has placed RHP Jared Hughes on Release Waivers, ending the pitcher’s tenure with the team.

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Pittsburgh Pirates have placed Jared Hughes on Release Waivers.

The difference between this and DFAing is if no one claims Hughes, he will be released and will not have a chance to be optioned to the Minor Leagues. It’s also possible, he could be re-signed to a Minor League Deal and spend time in Triple-A.

Jared Hughes has been a steady arm for the Pirates since his 2011 call-up as he owns a career 2.82ERA. However, Hughes struggled mightily in 2016.  He saw his groundball rate decrease from his career 61 percent down to below 58 percent, which is a death blow for a sinker ball pitcher.

As a result of Hughes’ poor season, some speculated that he’d be a Non-Tender candidate in this past offseason. However, Hughes signed a one-year deal with the team and seemed to have another year of job security. A very poor spring ERA of 11.57 doomed Hughes and as a result, he will likely become a free agent.

We will update you on this story as more information becomes available.
