Pittsburgh Pirates option Cory Luebke; Call up Boscan

Today the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that Cory Luebke was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis, while also selecting the contract of Wilfredo Boscan.

As per the Pittsburgh Pirates’ official twitter, the team has made some roster changes.

Coming out of Spring Training, there were some that viewed Luebke as a left-handed reliever with good potential to help the club. His performance during his time with the big league club has been abysmal at best.

Luebke had been out of the major leagues for three years prior to 2016, and any potential successful comeback story will be put on hold. Luebke could benefit form seeing more regular appearances at the Triple-A level.

The 26-year old Boscan will make his major league debut after two consecutive seasons spent at the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Triple-A level. Boscan has pitched to a 2.48 ERA in 40 innings, working primarily as a starter. At this time, it is assumed that he can be an immediate shot in the arm to a bullpen that ranks in the bottom half of the National League in most statistical categories.

In other news, Starling Marte has been reinstated from the Paterntiy List, while his replacement in Alen Hanson was optioned back down. Hanson saw limited action in his time with the big club, but did record his first career major league hit and also his first run. He flashed considerable speed, taking two bases on an overthrow to first base by the opposing pitcher. In doing so, he gave the club a glimpse of how he may be able to contribute later in 2016.
