  • What went right:
    • Ryan Vogelsong had a surprisingly good start in his Pirates’ re-debut, going five innings, allowing one run on four hits and striking out five.
    • David Freese had a pretty solid game overall, going 2-3 with a run scored and a walk.
    • Francisco Cervelli reached base twice, going 0-2 with two walks and one RBI.
    • Andrew McCutchen threw out Anthony Gose, trying to stretch a single into a double.
  • What went wrong:
    • Shane Green was fairly dynamic, going six innings, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out seven.
    • Ian Kinsler homered again for the Tigers and finished the game going 1-4 with one home run and two RBI.
    • J.D. Martinez had a good game, reaching base three times, going 2-4 with one RBI, a run scored and a walk.
    • Jarrod Saltalamacchia had the deciding blow in the game with his sixth inning grand slam.

The game started off fairly well for the Pirates as Ryan Vogelsong probably shocked everyone by quieting an excellent Detroit Tigers’ lineup, but the bullpen could not hold the lead as Arquimedes Caminero allowed a game-changing grand slam home run and the Pirates never recovered.

The Pirates looked to avoid losing a second consecutive series with Gerrit Cole trying to rebound from a fairly mediocre first start of the 2016 season.
