Pittsburgh Pirates Series Recap: Bullpen Struggles in loss to Tigers

Result: Pirates lose 7-4

Winning Pitcher: Jordan Zimmerman (2-0, 0.00ERA)

Losing Pitcher: Gerrit Cole (0-2, 4.22ERA)

Save: Francisco Rodriguez (2, 6.23ERA)

  • What went right:
    • Gerrit Cole had a much better start and pitched fairly well, going six innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five.
    • John Jaso had another tremendous game from the lead-off spot, going 3-5 with a run scored.
    • David Freese continued to impress, going 3-5 with one RBI.
    • Andrew McCutchen reached base three times, going 1-3 with a run scored and two walks.
  • What went wrong:
    • Gerrit Cole attempted a pick-off during a 3-2 count and John Jaso was not covering first base, allowing Justin Upton to advance to third, setting up the Tigers two-run inning.
    • Ian Kinsler continued to be a thorn in the Pirates’ side, going 2-5 with a run scored.
    • Nick Castellanos had a huge game, going 3-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.
    • The bullpen let the Pirates down again as Rob Scahill, Tony Watson and Arquimedes Caminero combine to allow five runs in just three innings of work.
